The Advantages of e-Documents for Educational Portals

An important feature of any knowledge-intensive organisations is its ability to learn. This includes the ability to learn external knowledge, but also the ability to learn from others inside the organization. Hence, the knowledge must be shared amongst the organisation members, and it has to be offered in an efficient way. Portalisation is one effective way to transfer the right educational content to the right user, especially when it is applied in a so-called ‘home environment’, the application or environment which people take as their start point and return to every once in a while. In this paper, we propose to improve this portalisation by revealing the unused potential of electronic documents. For this purpose, we provide a framework showing how electronic documents have a substantial added value to organisational knowledge stores. The main supporting AI techniques are automatic classification and personalisation; they are combined in a new way with e-documents and portals. Our conclusion is that portalised educational intranets contribute significantly to the process of bringing the appropriate knowledge to the right person and do so more effectively.
